About Us

Though the church is independent it enjoys close relationships with a number of similar Bible-centred churches in the area and further afield. It also plays an active role in supporting missionary organisations and individuals, prayerfully and financially, as they bring the good news of Jesus to people across the world.

The church is self-governing and led by a Church Pastor supported by elected church officers who serve the church in overseeing the practical working and legal requirements of the church.

The present Pastor, Gordon Cooke, has ministered in the church since 1995. Brought up in a Christian home and a Bible-centred church, he was converted as a child through listening to the preaching of God’s Word. Following graduating from university, Gordon spent six years as a Business Studies Lecturer in Further Education, before spending three years at The Evangelical Theological College of Wales (now Union) training for the Christian Ministry. Gordon is married to Linda and they have one daughter, Bethany.

There is One God

There is one true God Who is Almighty, Eternal and Unchanging. He is just, holy, gracious and merciful. He is the Maker and Ruler of heaven and earth. As part of His creation He is worthy of our praise for ever.

The Bible is God’s Word

God is infinite in wisdom, knowledge and sovereignty. In complete contrast, we are finite. Without God’s gracious aid we cannot understand Him nor form any relationship with Him. Being gracious towards His creation, God has made himself known through creation and also through the Bible in the Old and New Testaments. We therefore believe that in its totality the Bible is the inspired and infallible Word of God, it being the final and sufficient authority in all matters of Christian faith and life.

God is three Persons

Although we believe that God is one, God has existed throughout eternity in three persons, the Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

God is sovereign

God exercises sovereign power in Creation, Providence and Redemption since He has total control over all that happens in the entire Universe. Nothing takes place unless He wills it.

Man is a sinner

Although God created Adam and Eve perfect, after being tempted by the devil, they, by their own free choice, disobeyed God and became sinners. Mankind’s whole nature is now completely altered by sin and fellowship with God is broken.

Jesus is the only Saviour

God, being just and holy, cannot overlook man’s sin. Man himself is incapable of dealing himself with his own sin. Reconciliation is, from man’s side, impossible. God, in His mercy and grace, desires that fellowship between man and God is restored.

To make this possible, God became man in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a sinless, human life. He suffered and died in the place of sinners, bearing their sin, their guilt and their punishment. All those who come to God through the only Saviour, Jesus Christ, are thus set free for ever from the eternal penalty of sin.

God adopts believers as His children

All those who turn to God in true repentance not only receive forgiveness of sins but are adopted into God’s eternal family as His own children.

Jesus physically rose from the dead

There is overwhelming historical evidence that Jesus physically rose from the dead. In this way, in addition to His miracles, by His bodily resurrection from the dead Jesus is shown to be the Son of God. When His life on earth was over, He did not die again but ascended in power and glory to the presence of God in heaven, where he now intercedes on behalf of those who genuinely call upon Him in repentance and faith.

The Holy Spirit is vital

It is by the work of God the Holy Spirit alone in a man that enables him to be saved from the power of sin. He makes the sinner aware of his sinfulness and brings him to repentance and trust in Christ. He gives to him a new and eternal life. Through the in-dwelling and continuing work of the Holy Spirit is seen the development in this new life of the fruits of love and holiness.

God the Son will come again

God in His sovereignty is bringing all human history to a climax which will be marked by the visible, personal, return to the earth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

There will be a final judgment

When God brings this present world order to an end there will be a final judgment. The Lord Jesus Christ will come as the Judge of all the earth. Those who are the redeemed will be bodily raised to enjoy eternally and to the full the presence of the Lord. Those who have rejected Christ as Saviour and Lord will be banished from the presence of God for ever.

There is one Church

All who have been reconciled to God through the redemption of His Son, Jesus Christ, and they alone, may rightly be called Christians. There is one universal and eternal Church of Christ to which the redeemed – and no others – belong.

The one universal church is made up of “local churches”

The universal Church is composed of local churches. These local churches are fellowships of believers gathered together in one place by Christ, under the sole authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him as Head, a local church has direct access to God and enjoys fellowship with all other such local gatherings of His people in a unity which transcends all barriers.

There are two sacraments

The Lord Jesus, the Head of the Church, instituted two and only two sacraments.

1. Baptism: People are baptised one at a time on only one occasion. A person is baptised into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It signifies that man’s salvation is entirely due to God’s grace and to nothing in ourselves.
2. The Breaking of Bread: The breaking of bread is different to baptism – it is something which is done together by church members and which is done regularly throughout our lives. The Lord’s Table is open to all who are truly His. In the manner appointed by the Lord Jesus Christ, we eat bread and drink wine together. The bread and wine remain just that – there is no change in substance. The bread represents Christ’s broken body and the wine represents His shed blood. By our eating and drinking we remember and proclaim the Lord’s death.
